LBHS Football 4-0-1
The Titans from Whittier proved no match for the Breakers as the locals ran-up the sixth highest point total in 78-seasons with the victory over the Del Rio League team last Friday night at Guyer Field.
Laguna took advantage of a fumble recovery by Spencer Anderson and two interceptions by Robbie McInerny to break the contest open with a 21-point second quarter outburst.
The contest started with a good defensive series by Laguna with the Breakers taking possession for their first try on the mid-stripe after a fair-catch from a punt. Nathan Lancaster took the initial pitch from Larry Stewart and the Breakers were quickly on the board with a 50-yard run. The McInerny kick made it 7-0.
Titans looked sharp on their second possession, driving 80-yards on 12 plays to tie the contest. Laguna then went up 14-7 on a six-play drive, highlighted by a 35-yard Stewart to Keaton Martinez pass play.
Pioneer fumbled on their own 35-yard line setting up Laguna’s first score of the second period as Drake Martinez easily ran 18 yards for the score. A bobbled snap cost Laguna the PAT.
Once again the Titans appeared to be moving the ball when McInerny snagged the first of two consecutive interceptions returning the ball 35-yards to the Pioneer 5. Stewart ran the score in followed by an easy two-point conversion run by Drake Martinez.
Breakers last score of the first half came on an eight play drive after McInerny returned an interception 26 yards to the Titan 39-yard line. Stewart’s 26th career TD pass and the ensuing PAT by McInerny made it 35-7.
Breakers sealed-the-deal on the opening kickoff of the second half as Robert Clemons took the ball and handed off to Martinez on the two-yard line. Martinez then ran left and past the Titan kick coverage for the score. A Lancaster TD made it 49-7 late in the third quarter with the Breakers adding the final points in the fourth period. A bad fourth-down snap turned the ball over to Laguna on the Titan two yard line, but the Breaker bench was unable to punch it in settling for a short field goal by McInerny to make it 52-7. The final tally came on a Robert Clemons 56-yard punt return with just over five minutes remaining. The score was Clemon’s third punt return for a touchdown in his Laguna career tying Phil Jones (1948-50), Al Turner (1950-52) and Dennis Miller (1963). Breakers have 12 touchdowns on all returns so far this season, a school record by five scores.
Up next is Saddleback this Friday, Oct. 5, also at Guyer Field. The improved Roadrunners are 2-3 on the season and should battle Costa Mesa for third place. The visitors lead the series 5-3 with Laguna winning 56-3 last year. Saddleback can move the ball defeating La Quinta 43-0 and Century 35-7 this year.
