Officers will be deploying this weekend to stop and arrest alcohol and drug-impaired drivers with DUI saturation patrols. Police will deploy Friday, Jan. 22 after 9 p.m. in areas with high frequencies of DUI collisions and or arrests.

In the past three years, officers have investigated 169 DUI collisions, which have claimed three lives and resulted in another 55 injuries, Lt. Jeff Calvert said in a statement. One-third of fatal crashes involved drivers with one or more drugs in their system, he said.

He cited a study of drivers that showed more tested positive for drugs that may impair driving (14 percent) than did for alcohol (7.3 percent).
