Rollinger Earns Endorsements

Laguna Beach’s Democratic Club and Village Laguna, a group that promotes village character, endorsed incumbent Verna Rollinger for City Council, board members said this week.

Rollinger, an active member of the Democractic Club since 1972, has consistently embraced and supported the platform of the Democratic Party as well as the local club, Audrey Prosser, who chairs the club’s local politics. Others may be endorsed later, she said. Though the council race is non-partisan, Prosser said the club aims to promote Democratic candidates locally as well as nationally.

She described as “exemplary” Rollinger’s leadership on the council in pursuing flood prevention and as a former city clerk in making city records available online.

“Verna has consistently worked to preserve and enhance the unique village character of Laguna Beach, which is VL’s motto,” said the organization’s political chair, John Monahan, who cited Rollinger’s efforts to enact a 36-foot building-height initiative in 1971 and her support for preserving Laguna canyon, marine life, downtown diversity and historic buildings.

Village Laguna also endorsed ballot Measure CC, the $120 a year parcel tax to buy remaining open space. “Our greenbelt and open space are critical to our unique village character, and this measure will help immensely,” Monahan said.

Abels Stump for Whalen

City council candidate Robert Whalen describes his position.

Kathleen and Gregg Abel introduced council candidate Bob Whalen to friends last Sunday in their home garden.

“It is rare for a city to have someone of Bob’s caliber and experience willing to serve the community,” said hostess Kathleen Abel, who cited Whalen’s past  community dedication and public service.

Whalen stressed the need for strong fiscal leadership as a major plank in his platform. He also included disaster preparations and public safety as a second major concern.

“Here in Laguna Beach we know from experience that we are vulnerable to natural disasters. Planning in advance and knowing exactly what each neighborhood needs to do during a crisis is essential,” said Whalen, even as a fire was blowing ash into the yard.
