The Laguna Beach 12 & under and 14 & under girls water polo teams opened the season strong by winning the Evan Cousineau Cup this past weekend.
The 12 & Under girls got things started with a 9-4 win over Riverside on Saturday and followed that up with a 12-7 victory against the normally-strong 680 Drivers team from northern California later in the day. In the semifinals on Sunday, the girls got of to a slow start against SOCAL, but they came on strong in the second half to win 11-7. Laguna played CHAWP from the Inland Empire in the finals and the outcome was never in doubt. Laguna got off to a strong start and cruised to a 6-2 victory. They play next at the Spa Cup Championships Nov. 4-6.
The 14 & Under girls were possibly even more impressive. They opened the tournament on Saturday with convincing wins against Newport and Northwood by the scores of 16-2 and 15-4. The girls played Rose Bowl in the semifinals and led the entire game, cruising to a 10-4 win. Laguna played the always-tough Xtreme Water Polo Club from Corona in the finals. It was a tight game and was tied 6-6 in the second half, but the Laguna girls pulled away for 9-6 victory. The 14 team plays next at the Spa Cup Championships Nov. 11-13.
LB Girls coaches Scott Baldridge, Erich Fischer & Matt Tingler said, “We were very pleased with our girls this past weekend. Having both the 12 and 14 girls winning their age brackets in this tournament was a great start to the season.”
