Laguna Beach resident Michael Lewis ended his Ford Focus Midget racing career on a high note on Nov. 25, with a second-place finish during the 70th annual Turkey Night Grand Prix, at Toyota Speedway at Irwindale.

Lewis was driving the Western Speed #60 Ford Focus Midget tuned by Kevin and Kent Gerhardt and ended up in the sixth-place starting position for the 40-lap main event.

“It is hard to pass here at Toyota Speedway at Irwindale, so I knew I had my work cut out for me,” he said.

But in the end, Lewis ran out of time in his attempt at first place when officials shortened the race to 30 laps due to time constraints caused by too many yellow and red flag incidents earlier in the race. “My goal was to win this race for the Gerhardt Western Speed team and we came close, but unfortunately not close enough,” he lamented.

Lewis competed in four Midget events, winning two and coming in second and fourth in the other two races. He will travel to Barcelona and Valencia, Spain, on Dec. 12 for four days of Formula 3 Italia testing with the PREMA Powerteam, but has not yet decided where he will race in 2011.

He plans to continue his college coursework online basis at California State University, Fullerton, where he is currently a sophomore majoring in economics and business.
