Boys Basketball (17-3, 2-0)

Freshman center Nolan Naess scored a career-high 22 points to help Laguna blast No. 13 Rancho Mirage 69-45 on Monday, Jan. 15, in a day game played at Corona del Mar High School.

The previous week, Blake Burzell broke the 2,000-point career total for the Breakers in a win over Calvary Chapel and now has scored 2,039 in his 100 career games, including the Rancho Mirage contest.

In this week’s game Burzell added 21, Owen McMurray 11, Charlie Rounaghi eight, Adam Armstrong four and Grady Morgan three for the Breakers. Rattlers (15-5) were never in the contest.

Last week, Laguna had little trouble on the road in league play defeating Godinez 57-28 as Burzell scored 22 and Naess 13 to lead the squad.

Breakers recorded their second most lopsided win in their 84 seasons with an 85-22 win over Calvary Chapel at the Eagle gym. Nine different players scored for Laguna with Burzell with 22, Grady Morgan 16, Naess 14, and Brooks Hogenauer with 10.

Burzell has also broken the career rebound record and should finish the season with well over 800. Charlie Rounaghi set the career assist record verses Calvary dishing out 11 to pass Chris Sirianni (1996-98), who had totaled 432.

Charlie is currently second in career steals and aiming for another career record.

The team is on-track to finish with the best regular season mark in the 84 years of varsity basketball at Laguna. The 1962 champs went 22-4 before the playoffs while the 2007 squad went 23-5 for the regular season. Breakers have eight games remaining.
