A 32-year-old bike rider, injured when losing control on a steep trail above Laguna Canyon Road about 10:15 a.m. on Sunday, March 24, was extracted for emergency treatment by helicopter about an hour later, fire officials said.

Firefighters hiked in from the Big Bend portion of the roadway to reach the downed cyclist on the Telonics Trail, said Division Chief Dan Stefano. “The trails are challenging; he apparently lost control trying to negotiate a steep slope,” said Stefano, adding that, “the only way to remove him was by helicopter rescue.”

Rescuers on foot who reached the injured biker rendered trauma level care, said Stefano, who did not describe the injuries. The cyclist was accompanied by other riders, he said.

The injured man was flown to Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo, according to the police log, which said the man suffered either leg or hip injuries.
