Save Paradise

Editor,

We watched the storm surf this weekend bust our shore here in Laguna with unprecedented power. The waves from a hurricane were enormous. Two hours before high tide our beaches were gone.

Our Laguna Beach shoreline is changing. We must begin to face what rising ocean levels will mean here in Laguna Beach in 10 years.

Our neighbors at San Onofre are still on a 1968 plan for nuclear safety. SCE is continuing without outside protest to get the permits to bury 1632 tons of spent nuclear fuel on the bluff at San Onofre, 200 feet from the Pacific Ocean. What can you do?

  1. Call every California politician to shut down Diablo Canyon Nuclear power plant near San Luis Obispo. It is Fukushima waiting to happen and will kill our California economy for the next century. No one will address an interim solution to spent fuel in California until that deadly plant is shuttered.
  2. Write in support of US Senate Bill 854. Introduced by La Mar Alexander, a Representative from Tennessee and co-sponsored by our California Senator Dianne Feinstein. The national law must change before interim storage of spent nuclear fuel rather than a final deposit solution for the fuel can be created by the Department of Energy.

Two action items to save our paradise for our grandchildren. You can do it. Write your state and federal representatives.  A nuclear disaster is forever.

Marni Magda, Laguna Beach
