Parents in the Laguna Beach Unified School District were informed of an unspecified threat made by a student against Laguna Beach High School in a somewhat cryptic announcement issued Tuesday, April 19.

Police confirmed detectives interviewed an unidentified student who was overheard by a classmate making threats that were not described and are considering seeking criminal charges, Sgt. Tim Kleiser confirmed. Investigators expect to confer with prosecutors over whether to pursue charges this week, he said.

High school staff were informed Tuesday, April 19, of the situation that was initially reported to school administrators a week earlier, on Monday, April 11, district spokeswoman Leisa Winston said. Staff was informed at an emergency meeting after police informed school officials “that there is no longer a threat,” she said.

While school and police officials declined to disclose the nature of the threat, Winston noted that the district’s efforts to encourage students to come forward paid off. “The system did work,” said Winston. “What could have potentially happened, didn’t happen.”

On Monday, newly hired contracted security personnel reported to the high school to provide extra campus security through the end of the school year, said Winston. “The addition of a security officer is unrelated to the recent student threat, although it should provide reassurance to our students, families and staff members in light of the recent situation,” she said.

Kleiser said parents of the student suspected of making the threats also cooperated with the investigation.
