More than 30 Cub Scouts built rockets out of balsa wood with rubber-band powered propellers for Laguna Beach Cub Scout pack 35’s first Space Derby, held on March 22 at Laguna Presbyterian Church’s Tankersley Hall.

Similar to the traditional Pinewood Derby, the scouts designed, carved and painted their own rockets, with designs including torpedoes, space ships and a Cuban cigar.  “You sanded it down and painted it however you wanted. I really liked it,” said Webelos Cub Scout Jonathan Ranabargar. Awards were given for speed and creativity.

Troop 35 Boy Scouts and Pack 35 parents set up the space highway using fishing line and assisted the Cub Scouts in launching their rockets.  “If it weren’t for the sponge pads at the end of the lanes, some of our ships would have gone on forever,” exclaimed Webelos Cub Scout Zachary Falkowski.
