Senior Revels in a Thurston Tradition

Editor,

On Wednesday, March 23, one of my wonderful neighbors by the name of Max Suh, a sixth grade student at Thurston Middle School, invited me to attend a gathering being held at the middle school. It was the third day of this event. What happened with a host of sixth grade students participating was nothing short of fantastic.

With nearly a full room of guests in the gymnasium, each sixth grader stood in front of the podium and shared their experience interviewing a senior citizen.  This citizen could be a family member or even a neighbor.

The event was titled Oral History Project or Connecting the Present to the Past. Each sixth grader interviewed and wrote up a biography of their chosen senior citizen to share at the gathering.

Max did my bio and some pictures as well. It was amazing to watch and to have these young people honor their chosen senior citizen. When the student completed sharing information, each senior citizen would stand for a rousing applause from the crowded gymnasium. So impressive it was and such a wonderful idea and a way to honor people who have lived for many years. It was touching and wonderful and I am so lucky that my good neighbor Max Suh invited me. He did an amazing job.

There were also two large drop-down screens where we could see pictures of each senior citizen as the student shared highlights of a senior’s life. Tasty box lunches were served along with a variety of delicious cookies. All the sixth graders and staff at Thurston Middle School and the principal Jennifer Salberg along with all sixth grade teachers are to be commended for an outstanding and touching program.

Yes, I was totally impressed and loved every minute of the experience.
