As part of a countywide initiative, Laguna Beach High School was selected to be the first high school in Orange County to engage in a voter registration project, says a district statement.

In California, 17-year-olds who will be 18 by the next election can register to vote.

The Laguna Beach PTA Council and Orange County Registrar of Voters recently assembled and distributed voter registration packets to U.S. government and economics classes.

“Our focus this year is civic engagement,” Kathleen Fay, a member of the Laguna Beach PTA Council and regional Fourth District PTA, said in the statement. “In order to provide leadership and guidance to all PTA units, we are happy to pilot this project at our local high school.”

Government and economics teacher Mark Alvarez led a class discussion about voting rights and absentee ballots. “My students were pretty excited,” said Alvarez. “I think the privileges that come with being 18 are just sinking in!”
