Source of Fire Remains a Mystery

Laguna Beach Fire Chief Jeff LaTendresse says that investigators could not determine the cause of a fire that destroyed a La Mirada Street home last month, but ruled it to be accidental.

He said investigators estimate the owners, Richard Bisson and Paola Porrini, suffered a $4.5 million loss for the structure and contents, which included a contemporary art collection.


Monday, April 4

Brandish weapon. Park Ave. 8 a.m. A would-be car thief revealed a handgun in his waistband to the car owner, who interrupted the attempted heist of his vehicle.

Grand theft. 100 block of S. Coast Hwy. 2:21 p.m. Sunglasses, prescription glasses and a purse valued at $4,300 were removed from an unlocked vehicle.

Fraud report. 200 block of Forest Ave. 4:38 p.m. Scott Shobar Simoni, 30, was arrested for trying to fill a phony prescription.

Tuesday, April 5

Grand theft. 2000 block of San Remo Dr. A $2,000 laptop was stolen from an unlocked vehicle.

Wednesday, April 6

Petty theft. 2500 block of Glenneyre St. 1 p.m. Two watches valued at $10,500 were stolen from a nightstand.

Drug activity. Block of 31500 block of Bluff Dr. 1 p.m. Two juveniles were detained for drug violations and later released to their parents.

Fraud. 300 block of Broadway St. 4:40 p.m. A man attempted to pass a fake $100 bill.

Thursday, April 7

Burglary. 1600 block of S. Coast hwy. 9 a.m. A hotel manager reported that $150 and other valuables are missing from a cash drawer .

Burglary. 800 block of Laguna Canyon Rd. 10:12 a.m. No entry is made but a window was damaged at a catering kitchen.

Sexual abuse. 900 block of Meadowlark Dr. 6:58 p.m. A detective will investigate a teen’s report of a fellow student who touched her inappropriately.

Traffic stop. 200 block of Thalia St. 10:41 p.m. A 32-year-old Laguna Beach man was cited for DUI.

Grand theft. 31800 block of Coast hwy. 10:50 a.m. Credit cards left in a car were used at Costco.

Stolen vehicle. PD 9:12 p.m. A stolen Mercedes Sprinter was found.

Saturday, April 9

Traffic stop. Bluebird Canyon Dr. 12:27 a.m. A 45-year-old Florida man was cited for DUI.

Traffic stop. Vista del Sol 1:20 a.m. A 42-year-old Ladera Ranch man was cited for DUI.

Traffic collision. 31100 block of Coast Hwy. 1 p.m. A bicyclist was transported for medical treatment after falling.

Petty theft. 1300 block of Skyline Dr. 1:30 p.m. Four different people in the area reported stolen packages. One intended recipient discovered several emptied UPS packages.

Petty theft. 200 block of Ocean Ave. 4:16 p.m. A grab and run thief stole sunglasses valued at $450.

K9 event. Jamboree and San Joaquin, Newport. 10:22 p.m. Laguna’s K-9 officer Ranger assisted with a vehicle search and found 10 ounces of methamphetamine.

Sunday, April 10

Burglary. 800 block of Fen Way 12:37 p.m. Reports are incomplete.

Fraud. 100 block of Cozumel. 12:45 p.m. Taxes were fraudulently filed.

Burglary. 1000 block of Flamingo Rd. 1:53 p.m. A resident discovered an attempted break-in.

Vandalism. Griffith Way. 2:25 p.m. Vehicles were keyed.

Disturbance. 400 block of Cliff Dr. 2:46 p.m. An intoxicated man yelling racial slurs was arrested for a parole violation.

Burglary. 600 block of Glomstad Lane. 5:24 p.m. Prescription pills were taken in a break-in.

Traffic stop. Montage Resort. 10:50 p.m. A 54-year-old San Diego woman was cited for DUI.

Traffic stop. Calliope St. 12:48 p.m. A 25-year-old Paramount woman was cited for DUI.
