Breakers opened the 78th season with a doubleheader loss to El Modena on Saturday, Feb. 27. Laguna lost the morning game 4-0 after giving up three runs in the third inning. Zak Kovacic led all hitters going 3 for 3. In the nightcap, El Modena threw a one hitter to defeat Laguna 7-0. Will McInerny’s double was Laguna’s only hit. The Vanguards are a solid Division 1 team that is expected to compete for the Crestview League title, clearly better than most of the opponents the Breakers will face the rest of the season.
Laguna is competing in the Foothill Division of the Newport Elks tournament this week and will be playing Troy (March 3), Beckman (March 5), and Trabuco Hills (March 7) before entering the tournament playoffs on March 9 and 10.
The 15-game league season begins March 15 when Laguna hosts Estancia at Skipper Carrillo Field.
