Baseball (7-1)

Breakers won the Costa Mesa Division of the Newport Elks Tournament with a 5-2 victory over Segerstrom in a contest played at the Great Park Baseball Complex on Friday, Feb. 22. Laguna was able to scratch out five runs on six hits while holding the Jaguars to only two scores. Wesley Witteman received the win, while Brooks Hougenauer earned the save.

On Tuesday, Feb. 26, Laguna renewed one of their oldest rivalries with an 8-4 win over Valencia at the Placentia school’s diamond. Breakers won the contest with seven runs in the final inning to steal the game from the Tigers. Will Potratz’s three runs batted-in was the key in the rally. The Tigers still lead the all-time series 48-16.

Earlier last week, Laguna defeated Troy 5-2 in an Elks tournament game played on Feb. 20 at the Fullerton school’s campus.

Breaker’s competition will take a big jump beginning March 1 as they start their cross-over series with the Sunset Surf teams beginning at D1 Huntington Beach (4-1). Laguna will be at Fountain Valley on March 6 and host Los Alamitos on March 8. Laguna is 0-3 with the Oilers, 1-2 with the Barons and have never played Los Alamitos.

Player statistics are posted on Max Preps – Cutter Clawson is currently the leading hitter at .400 with 10 hits after eight games. Breakers have already hit 6 home runs this season. Clawson and Eric Silva have been the top pitchers and are both 3-0 on the year.

 

Softball (1-0)

Laguna scored 10 runs to start the contest and defeated Valley High School 10-5 on Tuesday at the Thurston Field. Rhys Campbell went 3 for 4 at-bat and Lola Fisher was outstanding at catcher. Laguna returned to action on March 1 at Saddleback Valley Christian.

 

Boys Tennis (1-2)

Breakers’ scheduled match with Trabuco Hills was rained out on Feb. 21, and on Feb. 26, Laguna lost 11-7 to Aliso Niguel on the home courts with two 6-7 set losses affecting the outcome. Laguna had three other matches late in the week with Mission Viejo, St. Margaret’s and Laguna Hills, which will be detailed next week.=

 

Boys Volleyball (4-2)

Off for “Ski Week,” Laguna returned to the court on Feb. 28 when they faced Laguna Hills this past Thursday. Breakers hold a 40-2 series record over the Hawks. Next week, Laguna will host Dana Hills on Tuesday, March 5, at Dugger Gym. This match will be the 49th best-of-five set contest with the Dolphins led by the Breakers at 37-11. Match should start about 6 p.m. Laguna will travel to San Clemente on March 7 and Santa Margarita on March 13.

The 34th Annual Alumni game is slated for Friday, April 26, at Dugger Gym and will include Senior Night and a tribute to honor the late Rolf Engen, who was instrumental in the success of the program in the 1970s.

 

Girls Sand Volleyball (2-0)

The sixth season of Girls Sand Volleyball opened last weekend in Santa Monica with a pair of wins for the Breakers.

Laguna vs. Palisades: 1s: Peri Brennan & Piper Naess won 21-2, 21-16, 2s: Kylee Matheson & Cambria Hall won 21-6, 21-11, 3s: Soren Patchell & Jackie Strawn won 21-11, 21-17

Laguna vs. Santa Monica HS: 1s: Peri Brennan & Piper Naess won 21-9, 21-14, 2s: Kylee Matheson & Cambria Hall won 21-16, 21-8, 3s: Soren Patchell & Jackie Strawn won 21-7, 21-10

Breakers are 51-13 all-time in Sand Volleyball and will face JSerra on March 5.
