Thieves Steal Sculpture

Santa Fe artist Mark White’s stainless steel and copper sculpture, “Flame II,” valued at $1,950, disappeared from outside 44 North Gallery, 484 N. Coast Highway, last Sunday, April 24, the gallery owner said.

The artist creates kinetic pole sculptures. “Flame II” was installed in December.

Several of a dozen other pieces outside the gallery were also found loose, said Robert Kronquist, who is adding additional braces to the remaining sculptures and considering adding a video surveillance camera. “I was suspicious they might come back the next night,” he said, adding that other works by White were stolen from outside a La Jolla gallery recently, too.

“The officer told me it more than likely will turn up on Craig’s List,” said Kronquist, whose father rented gallery space for 23 years to artist Bob Schaar, who recently retired.

Spring Break Crime Spree

Bay Drive near the private community’s clubhouse the next morning reported finding pilfering, ranging from iPods to sunglasses and skateboards, police Sgt. Louis Callus said. The boy suffered minor abrasions to a forearm, Callus said.

A dispute between Kerry Michelle Regan and her son escalated when she threatened to kill herself and drove off, which ended with her arrest in the 500 block of Anita Street about 10:14 p.m. for DUI as well as the other charge, Callus said.
