Recent Grad Suspected in String of Burglaries

An 18-year-old Laguna Beach man was arrested for suspicion of breaking into two unlocked homes and two cars in Laguna Niguel last week after he was seen walking shoeless near a condo complex in the early hours, sheriff’s deputies said.

Deputies who detained Cameron Bilbrey around 5:10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 18, found him in possession of a driver’s license of a woman, whose purse and other items stolen in the home break-ins were found in his car parked nearby on Cameray Heights, said investigator Aubrey Carroll, of the Aliso Viejo substation.

Carroll said Bilbrey, who graduated from Laguna Beach High School in June, is suspected in at least two other attempted break-ins that morning, including on in the 21200 block of Rue De Gauguin. A banging sound awoke a 16-year resident of the street at 4 a.m. “I could see someone trying to get in,” said the woman, who asked not to be further identified.

From her son’s room she released a dog, which barked at the intruder. “The rescue dog rescued me,” she said, describing an agonizing 18-minute wait for deputies to arrive. Another break-in report from her immediate neighbor came in while deputies were investigating. His front-door alarm had been triggered by the departure of the thief, who made entry from a second story balcony, said the woman.

Teens Suspected of Partying in Empty Home

More than one teen made themselves at home in an unoccupied Mar Vista Way house and took the owner’s Maserati for a spin while he was out of the country on vacation, police said.

The owner arrived home to disarray, finding broken items, dirty dishes, empty alcohol bottles and stolen items valued at $11,000, Capt. Jason Kravetz said.

A neighbor left voicemails describing the goings on for the owner, who did not receive them until his return, Kravetz said. The owner called police en route from the airport, the log notes.

Investigators have not yet detained or interviewed the juvenile suspects, Kravetz said.
