Football (2-3)
The host, St. Margaret’s Tartans, limited the Breakers to one major pass play, sacking the Laguna quarterback seven times in their 10 offensive possessions to earn the shutout victory in San Juan Capistrano Friday, Sept. 23.
In the first half, St. Margaret’s scored on their first two tries with quick four- and seven-play drives. The first two Laguna possessions were derailed on sacks while the third possession showed promise as the Breakers went 66 yards before turning the ball over on a fourth down incomplete at the Tartan 26. Laguna held St Margaret’s on down and appeared to show momentum on their next offensive try, but two consecutive sacks quashed that effort. The Tartans then went 82 yards in 12 plays to make it 21-0 and added seven more on a one-play, 74-yard bomb just before intermission.
In the second half, Breakers gained 37 yards in their second possession only to lose momentum on a seven yard sack. The third possession ended early in the fourth quarter after a 39-yard drive died on an interception at the St Margaret’s seven.
Breakers are off this weekend and begin league play Friday, Oct. 7 hosting the favorite, Godinez, at Guyer Field.
