Hotel manager David Hutton and executive chef Shannon Olvera take time to mentor Youth Shelter teens.

Residents of Community Service Programs’ Laguna Beach Youth Shelter had the opportunity to learn about the hospitality industry first-hand during a recent tour of the DoubleTree Hotel in Irvine.

The quarterly tours began in 2014 and include lunch and motivational talks about the importance of a positive attitude and working hard with hotel manager David Hutton and executive chef Shannon Olvera.

Hutton spoke of never giving up and striving to accomplish one’s dreams. He told the kids that childhood circumstances do not determine the future and that they all have the power to forge their own paths.

“These tours bring strength to our youth,” said Youth Shelter director Carol Carlson. “For many of our residents, this is the first time they are exposed to hospitality professionals and a setting like DoubleTree. Spending time having a nice lunch, touring a beautiful hotel and being encouraged by hotel leadership is a special act of healing.”

CSP provides counseling and support services for homeless, runaway and at-risk youth, ages 11 -17, and their families.
