Author Offers Insight into Newly Single Women

Rita Lloyd

Latitude 33 Bookshop, 311 Ocean Avenue, will host Rita Lee Lloyd, author of “How To Survive in the 21st Century as a S.S.O.F.F. (Suddenly Single Over Forty Female),” for a discussion and book-signing event at 4 p.m. Saturday, May 21.

With humor and intelligence, understanding and practicality, Lloyd, a Dana Point resident, talks about what women who find themselves suddenly single and over 40 can expect; how they can best handle the changes in their lives, how to maintain old and make new friendships, and how to create a new and vibrant life.

Historical Novel Explores Van Gogh’s Friendship with a Doctor

Laguna Beach Books will host a free event with Carol Wallace, author of “Leaving Van Gogh,” at 6 p.m. on Thursday, May 26. Wallace will read an excerpt from her book, answer questions, and sign copies at 1200 S. Coast Highway.

“Leaving Van Gogh” is a historical novel about the relationship between Vincent Van Gogh and Dr. Paul Gachet, a Parisian doctor whom he met in Auvers, France. Van Gogh, who had moved to Auvers in the hope that country life would improve his mental health, was originally skeptical of Gachet, who had a history of treating mental illness. The two men eventually became friends. As the novel’s narrator, Gachet sees Van Gogh as a painter, a puzzle and a project, and the story is one of friendship, genius, madness, and the art that bound these two men together.

Wallace received her master’s in art history in 2006. Research for her thesis provided the foundation for her first historical novel.
