The Laguna Beach Parents Club hosts its fifth annual Halloween Walk, which sets out at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 26, from Main Beach.

The parade of costumed children (and parents) make their along Forest Avenue, where most merchants pass out candy.

Those participating are also encouraged to bring a donation of pet food, pet toys, pet beds, and cat litter to Main Beach for the Pet Rescue Center. The non-profit established by Laguna Beach residents was selected by the club’s leaders to support.

 

 

 

Lift a Glass for a Cause

Tias Arms, a non-profit founded by former Hoag hospital nurse Joanne Barker, will hold a fundraiser to benefit children affected by HIV/AIDS in South Africa from 3-6 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 23 at Mozambique Restaurant, 1740 S. Coast Highway.

Now in its 15th year, Tias Arms provides supportive high calorie food parcels, school supplies, fresh garden vegetables, and hospice care for the children when needed.

      Guests will enjoy wines from South Africa and an assortment of hors d’oeuvres. A first class safari trip to South Africa with a private guide, vehicle and driver will be auctioned. “I feel like one of the luckiest people in the world because I have found a passion that will last me a lifetime and a group of friends who support this dream,” said Barker.

The sold-out eighth annual Girls’ Night Out raised $100,000 for the Boys & Girls Club of Laguna Beach last week.

Wilson Automotive Group, Montage Laguna Beach, Newport Lexus, Starfish, and Winston’s Crown Jewelers sponsored the event at the Laguna Beach home of Holly and David Wilson.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

  La Playa Center Seeks Teachers

La Playa Center, located at the Boys & Girls Club of Laguna Beach, is looking for volunteer teachers for its ESL program. Classes run from 9 to 11 a.m., Monday through Thursday, and offer three levels of instruction.

Teachers work one of the four days at one of the levels (beginner, intermediate, and advanced). Substitutes are also needed at this time.

Greenhouses Donated to R Star Foundation

Philanthropist Mitch Frisch has given a $5,000 gift to the Laguna Beach-based R Star Foundation, which will be used to build greenhouses in Nepal.s

The funds will pay for 11 greenhouses, which will help quake-hit families in Nepal raise produce and supplement their income in order to rebuild, says R Star founder Rosalind Russell.

The Laguna Beach Garden Club holds a holiday boutique 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 27, at Arabella Laguna, 506 N. Coast Highway.

Food and drink, creations by local artisans and holiday décor will be available for purchase. There is no charge to attend.

“Everyone is welcome to join us at the service, which will offer music and an opportunity for restoration, praise and prayer,” Rev. McDow in a statement.

 

 

 

Construction Project Closes Trail

Construction of a long-awaited Top of the World footpath will begin on Monday, Oct. 24, says the city manager’s weekly update.

The existing trail from the ridgeline Fire Road to Top of the World Drive will be closed during construction. The project is expected to be completed in three months, the report says.

 

Foundation Reports Impressive Results

In the first nine months of the year, the Laguna Beach Community Foundation’s assets gained 9 percent, the foundation reported.

“It has been a very strong year so far, which has been fantastic for our donors and non-profit partners,” said local resident Jim Fletcher, chair of LBCF’s pro bono investment committee.

 

Summit Drive Cut to One Lane

The undergrounding of overhead utilities along the 700 block of Summit Drive will begin on Monday, Oct. 24, the city manager’s weekly updates report.

While residents in the immediate vicinity have been informed, anyone else driving in the area should be forewarned that the street will be reduced to one lane weekdays during the construction through December.
