Girls Volleyball (8-5, 5-0)

Breakers swept their league showdown at Calvary Chapel (13-6, 4-1) last Wednesday, Oct. 5, before a large and boisterous crowd. The 25-14, 27-25, 25-15 win was due to the 15 kills by Lexi McKeown and the tough serving by the visitors that racked up 13 aces including six by Elena Gillespie and four from Lucy Fontenot. On defense, McKeown had 16 digs while Katie Hayden and Hallie Carballo each had 11. The contested second set appeared to be going Calvary’s way with the Eagles leading 25-24 and their gym rocking. The Eagles missed their serve to tie the set at 25 then Laguna made it 26-25 on a McKeown dig to Peri Brennan followed by a great set to Soren Patchell for the kill and finally Callista Wulff sealed the victory with a service ace to silence the gym.

Laguna’s lower level teams handled the crowd too as JV (11-4, 4-0) won 25-8, 25-18 and Frosh Soph (10-5, 5-0) won 25-18, 25-23.

This past week Laguna faced Godinez and Costa Mesa, on Tuesday and Thursday, Oct. 11 and 13. Over the weekend, Laguna competes in the 14th Annual Southern California Invitational at Alliant International University in San Diego. The 32-team event features ranked teams from Nevada, Utah, and Arizona. On Friday, Oct. 14, Breakers will play Eastlake/Chula Vista, Hamilton/Chandler AZ, and Aliso Niguel.
