Boys Volleyball (4-5, 2-0)
Laguna survived their initial league showdown with Costa Mesa (9-2) last Thursday, March 24, at the Mustang Gym with a 23-25, 25-13, 25-18, 17-25, 15-8 victory. Missing their two top seniors with outside hitter Tyler Alter (ankle) and setter Isaac Wulff (tonsils), Laguna moved all-county libero Cole Paxson to guide the Breakers as the setter.
In the first set, Mesa jumped out to a 3-0 lead and it took Breakers until late to tie the contest at 23 before Mesa pulled out the win on two cross-court kills by the Mustang’s star, Mason Tufuga (Stanford).
Breakers had little resistance in the next two sets as nine kills by Pete Obradovich led the second set and Laguna’s tough serving was key in the easy third set win.
Mesa jumped out to a 7-0 lead to start the fourth set and the Breakers could never get closer than two points in the game loss. Set five proved anticlimactic as the Laguna led all the way with seven blocks aiding the outcome. Overall, Laguna ended the evening with 20 net blocks, a new five-set match record in the rally scoring era (since 2004). Breakers have now won 70 straight league matches (ninth longest in CIF history) and also lead Costa Mesa in their best-of-five set series 67-1.
Breakers will return to play Tuesday, April 5, at Calvary Chapel and should be at full strength. Laguna will host Costa Mesa in the rematch for the league title on Thursday, April 21, at Dugger Gym.
