Boys Volleyball (19-4)

Darren Utterback’s boys volleyball squad opened their 44th consecutive trip to the playoffs with an easy 25-21, 25-15, 25-12 sweep of Cathedral from Los Angeles Tuesday, May 9. The Phantoms from the Del Rey League finished second to Bishop Montgomery and were a victim this season to the division placement software used by CIF.

Cathedral has been a dominant team in Division 3, but should never have been placed in D1 for this season.

Breakers are seeded 11th in their first run in Division 1 since 1998. Laguna participated in enrollment based division playoffs from 1999 – 2002 then in league equity based divisions through last season. This year individual schools are evaluated on success, strength of schedule and playoff history to determine which of the five playoff divisions they will compete in.

Breakers advanced from Tuesday’s victory and hosted Trinity League champion Mater Dei (29-3) on Thursday, May 11, with the winners facing Corona del Mar or San Clemente on Saturday, May 12, in quarterfinals.

Against Cathedral, Pete Obradovich continued to dominate the offense with 19 kills, three aces and four assists. Sam Burgi with nine kill) and middles Ryan Blaser, Barry Greenough were very effective in kills and blocks. Cole Paxson continues to excel as setter.

Last week the Breakers wrapped up their regular season sweeping Estancia 25-12, 25-20, 25-14 on Tuesday, May 2, as they captured their 11th straight league title extending their consecutive league match win streak to 88. The following day the Breakers dispatched Dana Hills in a non-league encounter, 27-25, 25-20, 25-13 behind Obradovich’s 23 kills.

Laguna extended their series advantage over the Dolphins to 37-10.
