Boys Sand Volleyball

The fall schedule starts later this month with volleyball legend Brent Frohoff assisting Darren Utterback this season with the squad.

Girls Volleyball (3-3)

Laguna swept Corona del Mar last Wednesday night at Dugger Gym shocking the Sea Queens with a 25-23, 26-24, 25-22 victory before a delighted home crowd. Among the witnesses were legendary Laguna coaches George Carey (1975-77) and Lance Stewart (89-90. ‘03-‘12) who won titles at both Laguna and CdM. Also present was Charlie Brande the former CdM and UC Irvine head coach.

It was Laguna’s first win in the historic series since 2009.

Breakers closed out the first set off kills by Soren Patchell and Lexi McKeown then broke a 24-24 tie in set two with a CdM hitting error followed by a great kill by Piper Naess. Laguna took an early lead in set three as the visitors could never quite close the gap.

McKeown led the Breakers with 12 kills, Hallie Carballo recorded 21 digs with Setters Peri Brennen (18 assists) and Soren Patchell (16 assists) sharing the setter duties.

This past weekend, Laguna finished 11th in the 24-team Mohs Orange County tournament, losing on Friday, Sept. 8, to Division 1, seventh-ranked Lakewood 10-25, 18-25 before defeating Division 2, sixth-ranked Orange Lutheran 23-25, 25-20, 15-8. On Saturday, the team lost to Division 1, second-ranked Long Beach Poly 21-29, 15-25, 4-15. In the silver quarters, Laguna beat Centennial (Bakersfield) 17-25, 25-17, 15-4 then lost to Redondo Union 8-25, 21-25.

Top hitter for the weekend was Lexi McKeown with 51 kills and a team leading 47 digs. Top blocker was freshman Jackie Strawn, Peri Brennen led in aces and set assists while Halle Carballo took the bulk of the serve receives.

 

Final standings: 1 – Temecula Valley, 2 – Long Bach Poly, 3 – Corona del Mar, Los Alamitos, 5th – Edison, Harvard Westlake, Murrieta Valley, San Juan Hills, 9th – Redondo Union, 10th – J Serra, 11 – Laguna Beach, Santiago/Corona, 13th – Tesoro, Aliso Niguel, Lakewood, Centennial/Bkfd, 17 – Huntington Beach, 18 – Orange Lutheran, 19 – Beckman, Bingham(Utah), 21 – Sage Hill, 22 – El Dorado, 23 – Newport Harbor, ML King.

 

This week the Breakers were at Division 1, ninth-ranked J Serra this past Tuesday, Sept. 12, then are off until the league opener on Thursday, Sept. 21.
