Boys Sand Volleyball
Doug Mauro takes over for the boys fifth year in sand competition, replacing Darren Utterback, who went 29-6 in his four seasons at Laguna with one OC title and four straight trips to the county championship. Utterback left to spend more time with his kids, now fully involved in their sports, and Mauro comes to the beach with deep experience as a coach and sand competitor. Breakers will again play in the OC League with CdM and Newport.
Play begins in September.
Breakers opened practice this past week and will participate in the 64-team Queens Court tournament this weekend at the ASC in Anaheim. Laguna opens pool play Saturday morning, with the tournament concluding on Sunday as the last summer event. The opening regular season match is Tuesday, Aug. 14 at Calvary Chapel. Twelve players who saw varsity action last season were slated to return for 2018, but a number of sand volleyball players may skip the indoor season.
