Where is the cohesive plan?

How pleased I was to read the statements of Bob Whalen, regarding the creation of an arts renaissance in Laguna Beach, imbuing our city with vibrancy and further opportunities to assist the arts community and to build upon our reputation as an international artists colony. But that colony no longer exists, engulfed by the changing socio-economic demographics and technology.

What is our goal for the future of our Laguna Beach?

Tied up in this revitalization plan is the notion that we must create a new venue. Build again. More construction, more tourists, further plans for parking.

Is this what residents want?

Is this what artists feel they need?

What about more opportunities to display works outdoors, the most gorgeous of venues?

What about more accessibility to show art in other parks, as is done on Main Beach? Or in restaurants or shops?

When a renaissance of the arts is referred to, who will decide what specific art form is given preference?

Painters, sculptors, poets, actors? And which artists will be selected to have a space in the proposed new venue?

“Build it and they will come.”  What is the rush to build? Are there no venues available already, like hidden jewels? And why must all art be housed together? What about various unused buildings in our village? What about our movie theatre?

There are so many questions Mr. Whalen’s lofty plan evokes. Will these revitalization plans be overseen by MIG, for cohesion with downtown specific goals?

I am fortunate to live in Laguna Beach where our politicians are concerned with helping revitalize our art community. But can we wait for further discussion and more input by residents?  Or must we rush to build a venue before we discuss the parking issue, which is a cause of contention and needs further explanation and consideration.
