The 48th Laguna Beach Patriots Day Parade is scheduled to step off at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 1, from Laguna Beach High School if it’s not raining hard. The National Weather Service is predicting a “strong” storm starting Friday night and continuing into parade day.
In preparation for the storm, extra city personnel will be on duty, making sure main storm drain inlets are clear, ensuring that equipment is positioned to respond, as well as monitoring the weather, City Manager John Pietig said.
Parade organizer Sandi Worthe says, “Keep your collective fingers crossed that we don’t have to cancel after six months work organizing our parade!” The final determination as to whether the parade takes place or not, will be made on Saturday morning. Worthe advises parade goers to check with her, 949 494-6016 or call the police department’s non-emergency number, 949 497-0701, for parade information.
To accommodate the parade and crowds, portions of downtown streets and adjacent streets will be closed to vehicular traffic beginning at 10 a.m. Free public parking will be available adjacent to City Hall as the farmer’s market will not be open. The city’s mainline bus service will maintain its regular Saturday schedule, with the exception of omitting service to the Susi Q Center on Third Street during the parade.
Traffic alert reminders via text message and email will be sent to subscribers beginning Friday, Feb. 28. (Subscribe at www.lagunabeachcity.net and click on the “Traffic Alerts” icon.) If a cancellation is necessary, a notice will be posted on the city website and signage will be placed along the parade route.
Parade organizers are honoring grand marshal Janet Evans, Olympic gold medal swimmer and Laguna Beach resident; patriot Robert R. Mosier, U.S. Army Air Force World War II pilot; citizen of the year, Wayne Baglin; junior citizens Perry Nielson and Garrett Burk; artist of the year Carol Reynolds; and athletes of the year, Alisa Schwarzstein Cairns and Ian Cairns.
The parade is to set out from Park Avenue and Legion Street, proceeds down Park Avenue, and threads through Glenneyre Street and Forest Avenue to end at City Hall. Once the parade is over, an awards ceremony will take place at the Art-A-Fair/Tivoli Too grounds. Parade programs will be available along the parade route.
