Winter Sports Update

Girls Basketball (W 4, L 10)

Breakers struggled through the Garden Grove Tournament due to missing many players for almost all the contests. The team lost to Segerstrom 50-33, Pacifica 66-39, and Godinez 50-31. In the final game, Laguna had almost a full roster and easily defeated Santa Ana 46-34. Breakers led 41-10 before clearing the bench. Emily Writer scored 30 and Samantha Garner had 13 in the effort.

Through 14 games this season, the junior forward, Emily Writer has scored 294 points (21.0 average) and has gone over the 30-point mark three times. Last season she set the school single game mark with 51 points against Costa Mesa. The school season and career scoring mark is held by Liz Stahl (1987-89) who averaged 23.5 points her senior season and went on to play at Colgate.

The 2010 Breakers have a shot at making the playoffs this season but will need a team effort to crack the top three spots for a post-season berth.

Boys Soccer (W 4, L 8, T 1)

Breakers struggled through the South Orange County Classic last week, losing 5-0 to El Toro, 5-0 to Mission Viejo, and 6-0 to Lakeside/Elsinore. Breakers were missing key players in these contests, but the squad did manage to defeat Sage Hill on Monday 2-0 in their final non-league contest.  League play opens today with Laguna hosting Costa Mesa.

Girls Soccer (W 3, L 8, T 3)

Breakers enjoyed a successful trip to the desert last week starting with a 2-0 victory at Xavier Prep on Dec. 28 as Alex DeGarmo scored with an assist from Kelsey Peterson. Melissa Chapman added the second score off a pass from Marina Paul. Victoria Ellis recorded five saves with Parker Yamasaki and Ally Manfrini providing key defense for the shutout.

The following day, Breakers traveled to Indio for a 3-1 victory over the Rajahs. Sam Kafer scored off an assist from Jessie Good Man. Good Man also scored with an assist from DeGarmo and Marina Paul added the third score off a Sarah Hewlett pass. Coach Bill Rolfing cited Christine Gardilcic and Kelsey Peterson for their defensive play.

Breakers battled highly regarded Palm Desert to a 0-0 tie on Wednesday, Dec. 30 at the desert school. Marina Paul and Jenny Maddocks held the midfield and helped in the defensive struggle.

This past Monday, Laguna concluded their non-league schedule with a tough 1-0 loss at San Juan Hills. The tough pre-league schedule should prepare Laguna for a run at the league title and a playoff spot. League play opened yesterday, hosting Costa Mesa. Breakers will host Calvary on Tuesday.
