Laguna locals Leif Hanson and Steve Blue again are organizing a Night at the Ranch with live music by The English Beat on Friday, Sept. 22, from 5-10 p.m. All proceeds from the fourth-annual event at 31106 S. Coast Highway directly benefit the Boys & Girls Club of Laguna Beach.

Guests will be treated to a farm-to-table dinner, open bar and live and silent auctions. Tickets of $200 per person and sponsorships at $500 are available on the Club’s website.

Tickets of $150 per person are also on sale for the ninth annual Girls Night Out, taking place, once again in the oceanfront Wilson family home on Thursday, Sept. 28.

Ladies only will enjoy bites, cocktails, shopping and pampering plus a swag bag full of girly goodies.

Meeting Set to Outline Sidewalk Improvements

A major sidewalk improvement project along Coast Highway between Ruby and Ledroit Streets is the subject of a public meeting Thursday, Aug. 28, scheduled for 5:30 p.m. in the Susi Q Center, 380 Third St.

The city and Caltrans will host the outreach session to provide information, answer questions and obtain public input about the project to make sidewalks more accessible to the disabled.

CERT Class to Begin

The next Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) class will start on Tuesday, Sept. 5.

Registration is still open for the next 25-hour session that includes classroom and hands-on training, and concludes with a disaster exercise.

Training topics include disaster preparedness, light search and rescue, fire safety and more.

Cox Awards Grants

Applications for grants of up to $5,000 from Cox Charities will be accepted online through Sept. 1. About $50,000 is up for grabs among Orange County nonprofit organizations that support youth, education, conservation and the military.

The foundation, which donated $51,000 to 18 local nonprofits in 2016, is funded by employee donations that are matched by Cox Communications. Cox employees will select one of the organizations to receive an additional $5,000.

Candidate Receives Endorsement of Retired Vet

In the hotly contested race among Democrats in the 48th congressional district, candidate Michael Kotick, of Laguna Beach, recently received an endorsement from retired Army Colonel Arnold V. Strong.

“It is during this time of great national change that Mr. Kotick’s work ethic, vision, and commitment to community and country is needed most,” says a statement from Strong, a spokesman for DeepCurrent, a Los Angeles-based software company.

“My endorsement is not about political party; this is about supporting a leader that can make positive, effective change for a brighter future.”

 

Ocean Awareness Challenge Hosts Fundraiser

Registration has opened for the Ocean Awareness Challenge, a fundraiser that will underwrite sending underserved children to a three-day marine science camp on Catalina Island.

Laguna Beach resident and founder Susie Campbell says the Nov. 4 event at the Festival of Arts grounds will feature a viewing of an IMAX movie directed by local filmmaker Greg MacGillivray and a presentation by ocean experts.

Local musicians Steve and Beth Wood will be performing during happy hour and dinner, and a fifth-grader from Top of the World will be giving a TED Talk.
