Letters to the Editor
The Letters to the Editor section will provide space to all letter writers who wish to express their opinion, though we would appreciate that the subjects be local ones.
We ask that you keep letters brief (400 words or less) and promise they will undergo the lightest of editing for style.
We generally refuse letters about a local business – negative or positive – and discourage letter writers from submissions that include personal attacks even of public figures.
The letter writer’s signature, (an email address will suffice) printed name, street address, and phone number must be included. Published letters will only use the writer’s name and city of residence. Letters must be submitted by 5 p.m. on Tuesday although we will try to publish late-arriving letters where possible.
E-mail letters are preferred. We may not always be able to type a handwritten letter in a timely manner. Letters to the Editor can be emailed to [email protected]
Letters Deadline: Tuesday 5 p.m. is cutoff.
Suggested guidelines for obituary writers:
Obituaries typically follow a formula, beginning with an opening sentence that generally includes these facts: name, age, city of residence, date of death, the reason for death, the city where the death occurred.
Then begins a chronological account: Jane Doe was born in this town on this date to (names of parents). She grew up in (childhood town) and went on to (higher education, career direction). Along the way, she (list significant accomplishments and or awards, marriage to whom and names of children.)
Please include the deceased’s relationship to Laguna Beach if it isn’t obvious.
Then survivors. She is survived by (spouse first, and city of residence; parents and siblings, and their city of residence; children; and then the number of grandchildren and or nieces and nephews, who are not generally named.)
The final paragraph typically includes service information and often suggested organizations for memorial gifts.
