Students Create Bowls to Change Souls
World Hunger Bowl, an arts fundraiser of National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week, relies on donated art, such as the bowls created by Nick Carter of the Backstreet Boys and marine-life artist Robert Wyland, for its silent auction.
Many more contributions come from compassionate high school teachers and their students, said Faye Chapman, of Laguna Beach, in her fifth year as volunteer chair for World Hunger Bowl, which takes place Nov. 6 from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. at Mozambique Steakhouse in Laguna Beach.
“There’s a beautiful symbiotic relationship between the contributing artist, the patron who purchases the bowl and the person in need that benefits from the interaction,” Chapman said.
Trabuco Hills High School ceramics teacher Jacque Fait said, “the students learn that donating their art is a selfless act and that getting a ‘thank you’ from a homeless person most likely won’t happen, but the students feel better about themselves by giving back.”
Her students created 75 bowls for the effort.
Laguna Beach High School teacher Somer Selway’s students turned 35 bowls. “I’m glad I was able to be of service by using the talent and skills that the students mastered working in clay for such a great
cause,” she said.
Proceeds from the effort will benefit Laguna Beach’s homeless community and the Collaborative Courts Foundation’s Homeless Outreach Program, whose 900 clients include combat veterans.
Each $45 ticket buys five tastes from local restaurants, entertainment and a student made bowl.
New Venue Provides Well Suited Canvas
Laguna Plein Air Painters Association awarded lifetime achievement awards to artist Mian Situ and museum director Jean Stern during its 15th annual painting contest earlier this month.
Scott W. Prior received the contest’s top $5,000 best in show prize.
Event chairs Rosemary Swimm and Julie Padach-Mathewson presided over eight days of events featuring 40 plein air artists, which culminated in a sold out soiree held in a vast tent pavilion at Aliso Creek Inn. The event, previously held at the museum, exceeded expectations not only in sales but in attendance, said Padach-Mathewson, co-chair.
Rolling Up Donations for Bikes
More than 230 people attended a Laguna Beach fundraiser for Wheels 4 Life on Friday, Sept. 27, raising $53,000 to buy 500 bicycles for projects in Kenya and Malawi.
The event was set under the stars at the Aliso Creek Golf Club. To represent the 27 countries where the organization has already donated bikes, guests were treated to a global cuisine themed dinner with cocktails to match.
