The 2012 Laguna Beach Music Festival’s Artful Violin Auction, both of which ended this past Sunday, Feb. 5, raised nearly $6,500 for music outreach programs thanks to the generosity of six artists.

Cheryl Ekstrom’s “The Weeping Violin,” raised the highest amount, $1250, from a bidder in New Yorkm according to organizer Diane Arnold . A Cambridge, Mass., resident had the winning bid for Kirsten Whalen’s violin, which he saw on display at the Visitor’s Center while vacationing in Laguna. She deconstructed the instrument as a podium for a miniature string player.

Violins created by Sandra Jones Campbell, Michael Obermeyer and Lucas Rise were purchased by Laguna locals, while an Irvine woman had the winning bid for Shannon Richardson’s violin. The violins were on display throughout January at the following galleries: Jo Anne Artman, DeBilzan, Miranda, Pacific Edge, S Cube, and Sotheby’s/the LB Visitor’s Center.
