To help educators address the prevention of alcohol and other drug use by students, teachers and coaches recently attended a workshop with Dr. Bill Beacham, executive director of the Center for Drug-Free Communities, the school district announced in a statement.
The so-called first responder training was developed based on an assessment in 2008 with staff, students and parents, Beacham said. Among the recommendations was on-going staff training in adolescent substance use, abuse and dependency, he said.
“We continue to be making progress in adding prevention strategies,” said Special Education and Student Services Director Irene White, adding that this year more services for both parents and students will be offered. “We are committed to do whatever it takes to reach our students,” she said.
“All too many times, adolescents rely on street information that just isn’t the truth,” said LBHS Athletic Director Mike Churchill. “To have up to the date research information available can certainly make a difference. It is important to have accurate information and reasoning to combat this problem.”
