Editor,

The City of Laguna Beach wishes to thank all of the local volunteers and retail markets for making the Dec. 18 “Day Without A Bag” event a tremendous success.

Despite inclement weather, over 1,700 free, recycled, reusable grocery bags were handed out to shoppers by volunteers from organizations including Laguna Ocean Foundation, Zero Trash Laguna, Transition Laguna, El Morro Elementary Green Team and Waste Management, Inc.

The purpose of the event was to remind the public of their role and influence as consumers in the effort of reducing waste associated with single-use grocery bags.

The city would further like to thank the following local grocery retailers for allowing the distribution of the reusable bags at their businesses: Albertsons, Pavilions, Ralphs, Whole Foods, and the Farmers Market. Their cooperation was greatly appreciated.

A limited number of free reusable bags are still available to the public on a first-come, first-served basis in the Public Works/Water Quality Department, located on the second floor of City Hall at 505 Forest Avenue. There is a limit of one bag per household.
