Susan Cannan, director of community services and assistant to the city manager, plans to retire, effective March 30, after a 32-year career that spanned jobs in six different cities, the city manager said.

Ben Siegel, who has served as the assistant to Lake Forest’s city manager for the past five years, was selected from a pool of over 275 candidates to succeed Cannan in both posts, City Manager John Pietig said. He has lived in Laguna since 2007 and starts on the job March 26.

Cannan, who was hired to lead the city department in 2006, helped oversee construction and opening of the community and senior center. She and her husband Dan have two children, a son in college and a daughter, Caroline, a junior citizen of the year in this year’s Patriot’s Day Parade.

In Lake Forest, Siegel managed financing of major public facilities and worked as a management analyst in the public works and police departments where he was responsible for the city’s emergency management and community preparedness academy.
