Bringing Music to the Boys and Girls Club
This summer music is filling the halls and playgrounds at the Boys and Girls Club.
For the first time music classes and concerts are being offered throughout the club’s nine-week summer program. Presented by Laguna Beach Live!, the concerts cover a wide range of styles -from the Flamenco guitars and vocals of Pasión Gitana to the student Mariachi For All musicians of the Capistrano Community Mariachi Program.
Former resident Dan Reckard and his Brazilian jazz combo Bossa Zuzu will perform next on July 23.
Weekly music classes are also being offered to three grade levels at the club’s main mranch. Program director Sara Warner and assistant Marlee Becker present weekly classes in singing, percussion and performance.
The music classes and concerts, made possible by grants from Applied Medical and the Festival of the Arts Foundation, continue until Aug. 20.
U.S. Bank Supports Local Theater
The Laguna Playhouse was recently awarded a U.S. Bank grant of $15,000 to support its year-round, youth education programs.
Support helps us provide innovative, high quality arts education for approximately 5,000 youth throughout the year, explains Donna Inglima, Playhouse director of youth programming. “Arts education improves critical thinking and spatial reasoning skills, while encouraging creativity and stimulating imagination. Theatre training encourages discovery and innovation, offering children a more complete picture of their own identities and an expanded view of the world around them,” she said.
