The South Laguna Community Garden stood in as an informal open-air chapel for the observance of Ash Wednesday, which uses ashes as a sign of penance and mourning and marks the start of Lent, a time of penance before Easter, which is on April 5.

The Rev. Andrea Paddock, deacon of the Faith Episcopal Church in Laguna Niguel, returned again to mark the observance in the garden and saw many repeat visitors.

She was joined by Joan Milliman, also from the Niguel church.

The deacon, the daughter of the late Pat and Dorothy Paddock, lives in the family home in South Laguna, walking distance to the garden.

Her father contributed history stories to the Indy and her grandfather Sherm Paddock was the former editor of the South Coast News and co-owner of the Laguna Beach Post, newspapers which were acquired by the Orange County Register decades ago and survive today as the Laguna News Post.
