Proposals from local artists for the city’s beach-themed banner competition are due at 5 p.m., Friday, May 20.

Completed banners will be displayed in City Hall’s Council Chambers.

An honorarium of $1,000 will be given for all completed banners selected.

In addition, the city is also seeking qualified artists to create a Sept. 11 Remembrance Sculpture from two artifacts, beams each weighing 612 pounds, originally part of New York’s World Trade Center.

The project is funded by Laguna Beach resident Mark Porterfield, and the budget is $19,000.

The competition is open to artists who live, work or exhibit in Laguna Beach. Proof will be required, and website representation is not eligible. The deadline for applications is 5 p.m. on Friday, May 20.

The sculpture will be located at Heisler Park’s Monument Point, in proximity to an existing Veterans Memorial. The art work must present the beams and reflect what they represent.
