Churches Mount Holy Week Celebrations

Neighborhood Congregational Church will hold its annual Easter sunrise service at 6 a.m. in Alta Laguna Park, 3299 Alta Laguna Blvd., including Native American flutes and drumming, as well as a traditional worship service at 10 a.m. in the church sanctuary, 340 St. Ann’s Dr. Worshipers can expect choral music led by Pam Wicks, a handbell choir led by Jennifer Baker, and a message from Rev. B. J. Beu.  The annual Easter egg hunt follows on the Montessori playground.

Laguna Beach United Methodist Church will hold its own Easter sunrise service on Main Beach at 6 a.m. led by Rev. Mary Scifres. Worshipers are urged to dress warmly and bring chairs, blankets and cut flowers for the cross. At 10 a.m. in the sanctuary, 21632 Wesley Dr., Rev. Scifres will lead a worship service that will feature the church choir, handbells, trumpets and horns. An Easter egg hunt and Easter cookie decorating and other activities for children will follow. On Good Friday, St. Catherine of Sienna, 1042 Temple Terrace, holds a Service and Veneration of the Cross at the church at 1 p.m. and again in Spanish at 7 p.m., as well as at 7 p.m. at the school chapel, 30516 S. Coast Highway. On Holy Saturday, the Easter Vigil takes place in the church at 8 p.m and Easter services on Sunday will be at 7:30, 9 and 11 a.m., and at 1:30 p.m. in Spanish.

The Laguna Beach Presbyterian Church, 415 Forest Ave., holds a Good Friday service at 12 p.m. and three Easter Sunday services at 8, 9:30 and 11 a.m.

St. Mary’s Episcopal, 428 Park Ave., marks Good Friday with services at 12 and 7 p.m. Church decorating begins Saturday at 9 a.m. On Sunday, April 20, an Easter vigil begins at 5:30 a.m. followed by a potluck breakfast and worship service at 10:30 a.m.

The Gospel of Radical Love is the title of the sermon planned for the 10:30 a.m. service at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, 429 Cypress Dr.

Pastor Gene Molway invites the public to join Salt Church’s 10 a.m. Easter service, held at El Morro Elementary School, 8681 N. Coast Highway.

Molway was commissioned to start a church in the Laguna Beach area by Mariners Church, where he previously worked as leadership development pastor.
