El Morro and Top of the World elementary schools were selected as part of the Gold Ribbon Schools Awards Program and will be honored at next school board meeting Tuesday, April 26.
The California Gold Ribbon Schools Award, which replaces the California Distinguished Schools Program, recognizes schools that have made gains in academic content and state performance standards.
Laguna’s two elementary schools are among 772 elementary schools to receive the awards, announced recently by state Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson. Schools apply for the award.
“It validates all the hard work of the staff and students, and acknowledges that we have created a strong instructional program to prepare our students for college and careers of the future,” said Chris Duddy, principal of El Morro, which submitted its writing program for award consideration. Teachers have been impressed by writing by students, who are now able to cite evidence and better support their opinions, says a statement.
Top of the World Elementary submitted its anxiety and mental health support system for awards contention. “Our goal is to meet the needs of the whole child ensuring they have the skills necessary to be successful in all aspects of their life and our multi-tiered systems of support enables us to accomplish this,” said Mike Conlon, principal.
