Even Out of Town, Students Exceed Expectations

Editor,

I met 20 young people from Laguna Beach last week in New York City. They were wearing the diplomatic hats of Turkey and Madagascar while attending the UNA-USA

Model UN Conference in midtown Manhattan. Topics ranged from human rights issues in the Mideast to the complexities of global warming and sustainable development among both rich and poor nations around the world.

Further enrichment for the students included an off-Broadway play that focused on the life of Winston Churchill, a visit to Columbia University, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

I was impressed by their excellent behavior and their genuine enthusiasm exhibited at the conference. Whether in the classroom or on the road, Laguna students seem to excel as a part of an adolescent success culture I’ve witnessed since I began teaching at LBHS in 1972. I commend the staff and students at the high school.
