Fifteen fifth-grade finalists from El Morro and 14 from Top of the World competed this week for top district honors this past Thursday, April 14, in an annual spelling competition.

The final round was scheduled for the El Morro multi-purpose room. Family and students cheered for the contestants.

Asst. Supt. Nancy Hubbell and parent Bill Steel served for the fourth consecutive year as spelling bee judges. PTA co-chairs Carrie Reynolds and Laura Keller presided over the event at both schools.

“It’s a great event for these fifth-graders and every year it is spiced with a bit of friendly competition between our two elementary schools making it even more fun,” said Reynolds.

El Morro’s finalists, above, were Jack Loechner, Charlie Rounaghi, Guy Thomas, Ariadne Fernandez, Sophia Diaz-Anderson, Ashlyn Stewart, Bianca Brock, Daniel Nash, Calem Lindsey, Sydney Huang, Julia Bowman, Marissa Schatz, Joey Ravenna, William Cahill and Max Blanchard.

TOW finalists included Makena Augenstein, Makenna Gaynor, Shea Skenderian, Alden Kramer, Joie Selin, Emily Normandin-Parker, Kristin Austin, Michael Davidson, Nils Wilson, Luke Colburn, Sterling Butler, Perry Cheves, Sebastian Jacobs and Larsen McCarroll.
