Laguna Needs to Take a Stand Again Editor:

Recently, behind closed doors, Orange County Board of Supervisors decided to join the federal government in a lawsuit against the state of California over its stance on immigration sanctuary.

Now, there are neighbors on Nextdoor.comwho seem to want the city of Laguna Beach to do the same. Although, I assume they are in the minority, they are determined and very loud.

This harkens back to 2006 when a small conservative advocacy group sued the city for allegedly breaking federal law by spending public funds on the day labor sight in the canyon. Our city won that lawsuit, and I’m glad we did. Our council was a voice of reason back then, and I was proud of how hate speech and intimidation was shut down. After the lawsuit, things returned to normal. Laguna remained the accepting place that anyone who’s lived here for a while can appreciate.

But here we are, all these years later, with a new group of people who seem to be emboldened by current politics. They are very vocal and are pressuring our city to join with other cities and Orange County to go against the state of California.

The immigrants here in Laguna are part of our community. They are people our kids and grandkids play with, they go to our schools and churches, they serve in our military, they work with us and for us. It is important that we shut down this discriminant anti immigrant pressure, and just like in 2006, we again counter racism in our town, once and for all.

  1. The whole relationship between immigrants from Mexico, Central and South America and the United States is swept under the carpet and not given much of any though except that through economic downturn and periods of social entitlement we have offered payment to immigrants for those larbors that we could just as easily preformed ourselves.
Because this is often times a cash only transaction, documentation in the form of qualifying certifications, and social welfare is nonexsistant
That what was once thought as a shortcut to cheap labor or “help” is actually now coming to light by the proponents as “play now pay later” whereas if proper documentation and social welfare was addressed we would not have this problem in the first place and there would be no calling for dignity of service or injustice by social standards, and this mainly stems from ingnorance of the judicial branch of the labor system. And this is why many people are asking for reform instead of shrugging responsibility and saying “MANANA”

  2. The disgraceful pandering to ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS by people such as Carey Strombotne overlooks the fact that these people aren’t “immigrants,” they’re illegal aliens, who broke the law merely by coming here. Mexico doesn’t allow Americans to work in their country. Branding people as “racist” because they object to illegals, who have broken the law merely by being here is typical Democrat divisiveness and dishonesty. Obama gave us eight miserable years of that, during which time divisiveness increased from 46% to 86%. (Pew Research Poll) “We won. You lost. Deal with it.” – Barack Obama, 2009 Payback’s a Hillary, isn’t it?

  3. Thank you for writing this letter, Carey. You are right, more people support our immigrant neighbors. I am proud that our City Council remains supportive of them and ask them to keep it up!

  4. Unfortunately now in Laguna Beach the minority rules the majority. Illegal is Illegal. Do you support the kid selling drugs in our high schools? Do you support gangs moving into Laguna Beach? We really need to get new people on our city council. We need change and we need it now. It’s time for the majority to be recognized in our city.

  5. Oh did I forget to mention? They immediately get a drivers licence and can vote. Now that’s special. This state is turning into a welfare state and these people that are so “accepting” are helping it happen. Trust me we are not getting doctors, scientist or engineers. We are getting people who are well trained in getting government support. The only thing I agree with you on is if they want to spend 4 years in our military to earn citizenship I would consider getting behind that.
