A former Laguna Beach track coach was among three men arrested by Costa Mesa police, who said they seized drugs and weapons in connection with an ongoing white supremacist gang investigation.

Among the trio arrested last week was Brian Jay Bishop, 35, identified by police as a resident of Trinidad, Tex., who district officials said resigned from a post as part-time coach on Tuesday, May 22.

The resignation comes the week after the Laguna Beach High School track and field season concluded. Bishop was hired as a walk on coach at the high school in August 2016, district spokeswoman Leisa Winston said. “He told staff he would be moving out of the area,” she said.

Bishop was arrested for suspicion of methamphetamine and firearms possession as a result of a traffic stop Friday, May 25, in the 2400 block of Newport Boulevard where another man was also detained for a warrant, a police statement said. Bishop has since posted bail and was released.

Later the same day, Costa Mesa police arrested a third suspect in the inquiry on weapons and drugs charges.
