Thank you to Mayor Bob and the Indy for their timely reminders of the disaster the Oct. 27, 1993 Fire in Laguna Beach was.

It is often the case that as the decades pass, the lessons learned from such an event are lost, and the diligent efforts required to prevent a future similar tragedy begin to decline.

We can only improve our future by remembering the past. Your coverage helped immensely toward achieving that goal.

  1. My name is Ray Patnoe, and I just want to give Susan Velasquez a 5 out of 5 star rating! I found her artical on the importants of lone, personal time to be right on.
I loved her explanations of quality verses quantity, and having an identity based on doing verses being.
The world would have much more love in it if we could all take a page out of her playbook.
Thank you for your artical Susan.
Sincerely, Ray Patnoe (South Laguna resident)

  2. I’d find more love for the City Council if it appropriated the funds to encircle the city with warning fire sirens that all brush-adjoining neighborhoods can hear.

Twenty years later and the city still hasn’t taken the precautions which could have helped save Lahaina – a city perilously similar to Laguna.

Instead, we’re paying $708,000 for Whalen’s plan for a parking structure that nobody wants (or so says 75.9% of those responding to the Indy’s straw poll). I guess that’s better than the $13M he wanted us to spend on his Presbyterian parking structure.

Yes, thanks Mayor Whalen for the timely reminders of fires past – now please do something about the future besides pandering to tourism and downtown business interests.
