Letter: Village Entrance Art Should Complement Spirit of Laguna

letters to the editorHaving just seen a sketch of the proposed sculpture of the village entrance, I am dismayed that something like this would even be considered by the arts commission. The proposed monstrosity is an insult to the memory of the many artists who, from the beginning of the 20th century, found the natural beauty of Laguna Beach and surrounding area an inspiration in their works that we still admire today. While this oversized top of an ice cream cone may be suitable for a new theme park or a Dairy Queen site, it surely has no place as an entrance to a village that prides itself in preserving nature. An entrance using the natural materials and plants of Laguna Canyon would be much more appropriate than the plastic and steel materials that the proposed VE “art” appears to be made of. Have any of any of the arts commission members seen how Frank Lloyd Wright’s masterpieces complement the area in which they are built rather than become totally dissonant with the nature and the spirit of the area? While Christo’s art may have been novel and amusing, his works were not meant to be permanent. The VE entrance is permanent and will define Laguna Beach for many decades. The selection therefore requires much more thought by the members of the commission and taking into consideration input from us, the residents, who love the natural beauty of this unique area. This monstrosity must not be approved.
