I write this letter in response to the article “Twisted Landmark Receives Special Status” by Andrea Adelson, in the Dec.4 edition. I wish to add that protecting the Melaleuca tree, which qualifies as a heritage tree, was a true community effort of equal partnership of not only the Beautification Council, but also the Laguna Beach Garden Club and city council. All three entities pooled their financial resources, with the city authorizing the actual planting of the understory of thorny natal plum and rare agaves. The city will maintain the Melaleuca tree, a treasure of Heisler Park. Thank you to all groups who worked together to make a difference in our city.
