For the first time in many years, there is more than one candidate for city treasurer. This unusual situation has provided an opportunity for Lagunans to learn more about what their treasurer does.
Turns out that being Laguna’s treasurer has nothing to do with keeping the books; the city has plenty of bookkeepers, who are well supervised by the Director of Finance to do that.
The treasurer on the other hand, according to the city’s official website, is the city’s chief investment officer and is responsible for banking services and monitoring cash flow, as well as serving as the assessment district trustee including oversight of fiscal agent and district administrator and conducting the transient occupancy tax and Business Improvement District program reviews.
Our existing City Treasurer Laura Parisi had me at “chief investment officer.” This position clearly requires specialized professional expertise. Laura Parisi is not only a CPA, but a certified municipal treasurer and has served Laguna Beach well for many years. Laura has my vote, and deserves yours as well.
