Zur Schmiede Backtracks on Campaign Pledge

Editor,

I read in your go-to local newspaper last week an article regarding our newest city councilman, Rob Zuhr Schmiede, and the village entrance. (“Entry Moves Ahead Despite Controversy,” News, April 17).

I am very confused as to who Rob thinks he is, which is not who he stated he was when campaigning for his current position of power.

When I ran very unsuccessfully for City Council, I stated at the first City Council candidate forum, in August of 2014: “I am not the typical American politician, who wants you to believe them, but when in office, they are someone you don’t recognize.”

Before the last few forums, I knew Rob was the type of politician I was trying to warn the citizens of Laguna Beach of. When he kept using the word integrity, I knew he was just another Republican huckster, as shown by his paying to be on a Republican tout sheet.

Regarding the village entry, a project that has had one name or another since the last century, Rob stated many times he was against spending money on more outside consultants. Well, at his first opportunity, he voted to spend another $455k. This is the sort of stunt Scott Walker pulled on the citizens of Wisconsin.

Personally, I feel it is bad manners to our electorate to switch an announced position 180 degrees at the first opportunity as Rob has just done.
